PrimerBio was founded by Maya Krishnan, an undergraduate in Biological Engineering and Brain & Cognitive Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. As the daughter of a first responder during peak COVID-19, she realized that 46% of patient to provider contamination occurs during glove removal. Driven to protect frontline healthcare workers, Maya invented the Touchless Glove Remover. She received seed funding for the project from the Torrey Explorers Fund at her high school, La Jolla Country Day School, and was awarded additional funding by the Martin Trust Center for Entrepreneurship at MIT, as part of the MIT Sandbox program for innovators. Her invention won the Silver Award at the Titan health Awards, an International Healthcare competition, in 2023.
